Was never a big fan of Elliot Carter.  Heard several of his pieces and never really liked them.  Felt they were sort of like listening to a math equation (though not as complex an equation as created by Boulez or Ferneyhough)
But, I quite like his Oboe Concerto.  Almost impressionistic with some wonderful orchestration.  Also a wonderful performance

I never knew what to buy as my first cd of Elliot Carter. I asked for E.C. in our local music-shop. Fortunately, they didn't have a single piece of him, otherwise I could have bought the "wrong" one.
Now I know which one to buy first: his Oboe Concerto. I find it awfully beautiful music. Indeed, great perfomance by Nicolas Daniel with the BBCSO.
Thanks for posting Dan.

Jan, his string quartets are great, IMO. Lol, you put it so perfectly, its awfully beautiful music. Also, for orchestral works I think that his "3 Occasions for Orchestra" is fantastic, as well are his piano concertos. I have to play like 5 gigs in the next 3 days (no, really), but I'll have some free time in there and I'll do my best to try to get you some mp3's.

Thanks Steve! I'll check 'em out.
I don't understand why he isn't in the 20th Century Piano Anthology - he is really a great composer.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for posting these. Some great pieces! I really liked Carter's large-scale orchestral works. His string quartets, which are considered some of his best works, aren't my favorites. Think I'll have to go back and re-listen to 'Night Fantasies'
All of his pieces certainly demand repeat listens to grasp their beauty and complexity.

Thanks again,
Dan

Hey Dan, yeah, I agree with you about the string quartets. I think they are more renowned for their innovations really. The one I posted is probably my favorite of those. I'm interested in hearing more of EC's neo-classical writing myself. I haven't been exposed to much of it. Any suggestions there?

Did they disappear before I had a chance to listen? Too bad!

I'll put them back up. They're there for you to download if you wish. Let me know when you have, so I can take them back down.
