Any suggestions? I'd prefer a school in the south or the midwest but am open to any help you can offer. | | Back to Top | | Devin Chaloux Registered Member

I guess I should have stated that I still have a couple of semesters before I finish my bachelors. | | Back to Top | | BIGHIG13 Registered Member Date Joined Nov 2009 Total Posts : 67 | Posted 11/11/2009 1:42 AM (GMT -5) | | I've been looking at Illinois, Arizona State, North Texas, and UC San Diego. All schools attended by colleagues and teachers of mine.
I'm hoping to get into teaching composition at the university level as well as pursuing a career as a composer. I imagine I have that in common with a lot of the people here. | | Back to Top | | Devin Chaloux Registered Member

Interesting choices to say the least. Visited Illinois, big campus, beautiful world-class hall. Don't know too much about ASU or UC-SD. North Texas is the creme of the crop when it comes to band programs and I know a lot of their other DMA programs are fairly intense. Best of luck...great school if you can get in.
As far as being in common with the people here, well Steve is a rogue :P but wants to go back for composition, Cattie is right now at a publisher but earned his degree in Ed, I'm just finishing up applying for theory (I have NO desire to be a professional composer), and a few of the other regulars just have this as a hobby. I actually don't know of one person here that is currently attending a graduate composition program at the moment on this board.
We all do it for the same reason (well except for Steve...and he's probably going to take issue with this), but we compose for fun (which he may agree with) and composer for our audiences (something he'll definitely disagree with). | | Back to Top | | BIGHIG13 Registered Member Date Joined Nov 2009 Total Posts : 67 | Posted 11/11/2009 1:11 PM (GMT -5) | | For my master's I'm really thinking North Texas may be my best bet. One of my professors got his masters and DMA there and he swears by them. Being that I'm currently living in Little Rock,AR, Moving just 4 hours away to North Texas appeals to my wallet as well.
As far as Illinois goes, most of the Arkansas Symphony has done their graduate work there. That's a statistic I can't ignore.
UCSD has a doctorate program that appears to be really well suited to composers. It's a series of apprenticeships with their composition staff. Sounds pretty good to me. | | Back to Top | | BIGHIG13 Registered Member Date Joined Nov 2009 Total Posts : 67 | Posted 11/11/2009 3:57 PM (GMT -5) | | | | Campbell Registered Member Date Joined Sep 2008 Total Posts : 44 | Posted 11/21/2009 11:41 AM (GMT -5) | | | Im at eastman right now and the weather will drive you insane :) | | Back to Top | | Devin Chaloux Registered Member

I just had an excellent trip to the University of British Columbia. | | Back to Top | | | Forum Information | Currently it is Thursday, September 02, 2010 1:05 PM (GMT -5) There are a total of 9,835 posts in 1,130 threads.
