I would like to know what the following means and the system behind it... anyone?

3.3.3.3; 4.3.3.1; 1 timpani
player; 3 percussion players; harp; strings
(14.12.10.8.6).

3x3x3x3 refers to the number of instruments in each woodwind section, (3 of everything) 4x3x3x1 refers to brass (4 horns, 3 trumpets ect.)
